今回は中央大学の統一日程の正誤問題を見ていくことにしよう。今回の問題は、形だけで捕らわれずに、意味や指示語などの細部まで見ることが必要になる問題もあり、見た目だけで判断をしないようにすることが大切と言えるだろう。(例えば(1)の③や(2)の④選択肢) 早慶の正誤問題を出題する大学受験をする受験生にとっては、いい練習になったのではないだろうか。合格するためには、自信がなくても3/5を取りたいところである。
大問2 次の1～5の英文の①～④には、文法・語法・内容上の誤りを含むものが、それぞれ1つあります。その記号をマークしなさい。(10点)

[解法のポイント]
(1) 下線部の④は、関係代名詞whichにおける先行詞は前文全体を指しており、先行詞は代名詞で表せばitとなる。よって、関係詞節内は受動関係にする必要があるので、is neededの受動関係にする必要がある。他の選択肢について考察をすると、①のchoose「～を選ぶ」(過去形 chose→ 過去分詞形 chosenになることに注意)、②のaround the subject「科目の周囲」という意味になることから正しい。
[文構造] Students (S) [who(関代) ① choose a subject (関代目的格省略) [they really like]] ② tend(V) to do better (C) [because they (S’) have (V’) the motivation(O’) ～.
(2) 下線部の①は、include「～を含む」はthat節を取れないことや文意NGであることから、includeをconclude「～を結論付ける」に訂正をするべきである。また、他の選択肢に着目すると、at the risk of A「Aの危険性」という熟語が有名だが、前置詞toを用いて「～に対する危険性」という意味でも用いられる。さらに、③はbones「骨」との関係から受動関係で正しい、④ doses「服用量」という意味で用いられている。
(3) argueの後ろにSVがあることから、前置詞は後ろに置くことが出来ない。よって、argue that節の形にする必要があるので、②のatを削除して、argue thatにするべきである。

(4) 下線部④の副詞節の主語はprevious generationsを指していることから、theyに訂正するべきである。他の選択肢を考察すると、①のbusinessesは複数形であることから、動詞haveとの対応も合致している。(SVの一致)さらに、下線部③の「前の世代」という表現はprevious generationsとなるので正しい。(「一世代前」は a generation agoと表し、このように特定されている場合は、単数形になるので注意が必要である。)
(5) [熟語] test on A「Aに関する試行調査」という意味になるので、②のtoをonに訂正。
他の選択肢に着目すると、①はcarry out A「Aを実行する」という意味であり、③は(at) the sight <of A[省略]> 「Aの光景」が用いられ、on the oceans「海上で」という意味で用いられており正しい。さらに、④のby(期限)「～まで」⇔ till(until) (継続)「～までずっと」の区別には注意が必要である。
